Three Strikes, Go to First?

By: Evan Pence and Spencer Jones

The rule in baseball is that if a batter has two strikes, no runner on first, and he swings and misses but the ball hits the dirt, he can run to first.  The catcher then has to throw him out at first or tag him.  This rule was the center of some controversy at the White Sox and Angels game.

The White Sox catcher was up to bat with no one on, two strikes, and two outs.  A low curve ball was thrown, and the batter swung and missed.  The ball hit the catcher’s glove and the dirt at the same time, meaning that the batter could run to first.  That is exactly what he did.  This was said to set the tone for the whole series.  Need proof to back that up? The Angels haven’t won a game since the above incident occurred.

Could this miscommunication between the umpire and the Angels’ catcher shape the outcome of the whole NLCS series?  This rule should be reviewed and revised.  Then again, a lot of White Sox fans are very happy that this rule exists.
